Warminster Town Football Club History
Warminster Town as a football club can be traced back to 1878 and with a short two year break between 1883/5 it has been in existence ever since.
They started playing friendly games at Holly Lodge, Boreham Road, before joining the Wiltshire County League winning their first trophy (Wilts Senior Cup 1900/01) and won on irregular basis up to 1933.
They joined the Western League for the first time in 1930 and played in the league until the outbreak of the War.
After the War they rejoined the Wiltshire County League until they rejoined the Greatmills Western League in 1983. In the 94/95 season they finished in their highest position of 4th creating many club records watched by an average crowd of 202 spectators.
Although the club accrued severe debts in the 80s a new committee turned things around so the club could progress with a positive rebuilding programme.
In the very early 90s the old wooden stand was deemed too dangerous and had to be demolished. From the rubble the present club house was erected and opened on the 24th June 1994 by the then Club Chairman Bob Peaty who organised the complete project costing in the region of 110,000. During the construction the garages at the Weymouth Street end of the ground were utilised as changing rooms with permission from the Western League and the Wiltshire FA.
Unfortunately the club was regulated from the Western League in the 2001/02 season so it was back to the Wiltshire League playing in the Premier League. In most of the seasons The Town finished in the top half of the Premier League until the 2005/06 season when they finished third.
The committee decided a new challenge was necessary and were successful in their application to join the Sydenhams Wessex League.
In their first season they finished a creditable 8th and their best season so far was 5th in the 2008/09 season.
The same season they won through to the final of the Wiltshire Senior Cup played at Chippenham Town FC against Highworth Town from the Hellenic Premier League. Following a very close game The Town lost in extra time. It was 50 years since their last appearance in the Senior Cup Final.
The club are managed this season by the youngest Manager in the Wessex League and are looking to improve on their best finish of 5th last season.
